Yes, I am still here. I just took a long break and to be honest, I left the $5 Sale up much longer than I intended. Many people used it to their advantage and I am glad. So I am back, but where did I go? Let’s just say it was a sabbatical of sorts with time to think and breathe. Most things were the same: my morning routine, the kids, work, and play. But, it has been hard to get my heart into things. I am so used to giving projects the extra flair and for some reason, I lost the extra bit of creative wit that I require. I feel it coming back though and I am excited for what is ahead. You’ll see what I mean…

So the other day I found a note – from a boy – in Madeline’s backpack. Hmmm. All it said was, “Meet me by the tables.” I thought about it for a minute and then decided to ask her about it. She said that she had started recycling with some boys in her 3rd grade class during lunchtime. Okay, no big deal. I forgot something in the whole note writing thing though…that she may have written him back. I ran into the mother of the boy yesterday and she informed me what my dear daughter was writing to him. Hmmm. Nothing bad, but Madeline and I did have a chat. I asked her what she wrote to him and she told me she “forgot.” Okay, I didn’t prod her because if she doesn’t feel like she wants to tell me, that’s okay by me. Plus, I already knew what she wrote anyway. But I gave her 2 parental insights to the situation. First, no writing notes in class! Focus on your studies, girlfriend. Second, never write anything that can’t be announced to the rest of the class. If someone were to get a hold of some precious “secret” words, it has the potential – imminent potential – of being announced to some people that would make fun of her and embarrass her to tears.

It reminds me of the time I wrote a nasty note in 7th grade. I was extremely upset at a girl that was spreading untrue rumors about me. I wrote in my note how I would love to beat her up and get everyone to hate her. Well, the teacher walked by and asked me to give her the note. She went back to her desk and read it. I was mortified that she may read it to the class, as this has been known to happen. Instead, she folded it back up and called me to her desk. She handed me the note back and told me to go see “Cowboy Callahan,” the Vice Principal. Mr. Callahan was a nice man but occasionally we would hear him over the loudspeaker, “This here is Cowboy Callahan and – yee-haw – it’s time for a Tardy Round-up!! Teachers, lock your doors and send your tardies to the MPR for a detention slip.” I never once got detention for Tardy Round-up. In fact, I had never been in trouble before. So I took the note and went to the office. I sat and waited for him to see me and when he called me in, I just handed him the note and started to cry. He wasn’t happy about it but also asked me why I was so angry against the girl. I told him that she spread rumors about me and I didn’t know what else to do than rally other girls to hate her. He gave me a few tips for dissolving such situations, asking for help from teachers if I needed to. But then he said he is going to have to call my parents because they needed to know. Darn. That episode temporarily ended my note writing career and I definitely didn’t write anything that others couldn’t read.

I did tell my baby girl about my note writing experience – leaving out the beat-up and hating parts. Hopefully, she learned from my lesson and from her own embarrassment of knowing her mom found a note and read it. I had my chat with her in hopes that I may have possibly spared her some pain and embarrassment of others finding words written in secret.

I had 2 extra kids and one had a frog named “Todd.” Poor Todd was caught at recess and was in a plastic water bottle with a few blades of grass and sloshing water. I took the 4 kids + frog to Costco and let’s just thank the Lord I don’t have 4 little voices calling me mommy. With all of the goods, we barely fit into the car when we left. It brought back fond memories of this childhood fave…

Summer is here and the natives are out of school. The weather is heating up and the pool is beckoning us to come cool off later this afternoon. I enjoy the morning chill with my warm mug of coffee. Madeline and Owen got up this morning, immediately dressed, and went in the backyard on the side of the house to build something. I know enough to let them alone as their imaginations are running wild and would halt abruptly at the sight of an adult. I can hear them though and it is enough to make me smile. They are working together and getting along so interrupting such a sweet moment would be short-sighted.

Last Monday, we all had a terrible day as we transitioned into Summer mode. The kids wandered aimlessly because they didn’t need to prepare for school and consequently fell to boredom and quarreling. I fell apart because my house was a wreck and any attempt to keep it clean was just futile. We’ve come a long way this week in our transition. It’s Friday and Madeline and Owen know they have a few responsibilities to complete before leaving the house – both academic and domestic. I have staked out a few rooms that they are not to clutter under any circumstances and let go of the others until just before bedtime. I have also learned that a stocked fridge equals a happy family. This is do-able for me. This week has been a week of negotiations on everyone’s part so now we can feel free to play knowing the boundaries and expectations of Summertime.

We heard the strange pop noise and then got a call from our next door neighbor that the hill behind us was on fire!! Too close for comfort. I roused the neighbors because I saw flames and kind of freaked out thinking the worst and if we needed to evacuate, I wanted everyone to have a fighting chance. You never know with CA fires. I ran across the street in my pjs and socks and started banging on doors like a mad-woman. This is on the heels of our 911 call yesterday for a little guy who had a bad asthma attack (he took a med-evac ride to San Diego and is stabilizing). I think we are going to rename our block Wisteria.

The fire trucks came and it was out in about 30 minutes. Luckily, we still have June Gloom and no wind so it was out really quick. They are still cleaning it up as I write and investigating. From the pop sound, we think it was started by the electrical poles. Anyway, Good Morning Sunshine!!
